Lupus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease. Almost every system in the body can be affected by it. With Lupus the body regards its own cells and tissues as alien to it and the defence mechanisms in the body attacks itself! The result is pain, tissue inflammation and in some cases organ damage. It is thought that between 20 to 30 genes contribute to the risk of developing Lupus and there may be environmental factors as well.
