| Description: | Mercy Ships run hospital ships and on-land health programmes in West Africa, providing much needed surgeries and partnering with local communities in construction projectsfor health facilities and ongoing health education.
We work with local people to build water and sanitation facilities, and on agricultural projects being the pre-requisite for health and wellbeing.
Our volunteer medical teams provide operations on conditions such as cataracts and corneal growths, cleft lip and palate, maxillo facial reconstructive surgeries, removal of benign tumours, orthopaedics for polio and landmine victims, fistula repair for those suffering with VVF, and many other needs. Hundreds of such operations are currently being carried out by the service of our ship, the Anastasis.
Our new ship, the Africa Mercy will sail to Liberia in Spring 2007. Formerly a Danish rail ferry, the Africa Mercy has been re-fitted in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and will provide 6 operating theatres, including 2 ophthalmic |
